Sharing our Road Trip!

Well, I finally have a few minutes to update you on our travels. We stayed in Birmingham for a little over a week. In that time we spent some time at Oak Mountain, which is a state park in the area. They had a wonderful farm/petting zoo there with lots of goats and baby goats, sheep, lambs, a few donkeys, and a friendly rooster! You could just go into the pasture and sit down and the animals were all over you. We went two different days and spent a couple of hours each time.

We also did some fishing at a lake in the park on Father's Day. One afternoon we were able to spend at the Birmingham Zoo with Pop, which was very nice for the kids. They haven't been able to spend any time with Pop in over a year. The rest of the visit was spent hanging out with GG, shopping, eating out and having a great time! We were really missing Stan after a week, and he was missing us, so on Wednesday night he flew in to Birmingham and spent the night. The next morning we got up and headed to Atlanta to meet my friend Marqui and her daughter Jenna Lee at the Atlanta Aquarium. Somehow, Marqui has all of the good pictures from the aquarium, so maybe I can add those later!

About 3:00 in the afternoon, we set out for NC. I couldn't post earlier because I didn't want to spoil the surprise, but we had been planning a surprise 60th birthday party for my mom for a few months. The big day was finally upon us! Our plans were to drive to Charlotte and pick Stan up from the airport (he flew from Atlanta after working at one of his AL hospitals). We were driving to Ellerbe, NC to spend a couple of days at Ellerbe Springs, a bed and breakfast in Richmond County where Stan and I had our wedding rehearsal dinner/party. We had not been there in 13 years. We arrived at the B & B around 10:30 pm and settled in for the night.

The next morning, my dad was dying to see the kids, but we could not go near Hamlet because we were afraid my mom would see us. Part of her surprise party was a visit from her FL children! We met my dad at his fishing club for a morning of catching bream!

After our "sneaky" fishing trip, we spent the afternoon at the B & B. Jami and Reyn brought Braxton up late Friday night after VBS. He did not know we were in town either, and we had to keep it a secret until he saw Nannie for the last time at church on Friday night. Saturday was spent with last minute details, moving to Jami's house with our things without being seen, hiding our car in Jimmy and Shelby Smith's garage, and setting up tables at Hinson Lake where the party would take place. Finally, we were ready and waiting the "birthday girl."

This is the big entry! She was completely shocked, which was surprising to all of us, because we usually have a hard time getting anything by Mama. To see more birthday pictures, take a look at my Facebook page.

The party was a huge success. There was a big crowd, the perfect place, and she was totally surprised.

Sunday morning, we left to drive back to Florida in two cars. Mama, Daddy, Jami and Braxton came home with us. I will make a separate post of pictures from the past two weeks of their visit. Our road trip was lots of fun!!
